The festival director, Selvaggia Velo, visits India every year to curate the finest of Indian cinema across all genres, from short films to animation films to documentaries. On one such visit, she dropped by our studio and asked if we could make the signature film for this festival. We knew this film will be different from the ads we work on (where we are compelled to compress an idea into 30 seconds or less!). The studio happily got on board and started working on an animation film for the festival.
For a smooth and classic finish, we decided to go with classic 2D animation for this one, with each frame hand-drawn by our talented in-house artists. Made to look like a modern version of folk art, this film draws influences from Jamini Roy’s work and Patta Chitra Katha, a traditional form of leaf painting folk-art. The idea was to showcase in a fun way the embodiment of Indian culture, arts, theatre, etc travelling to Italy. The film contains diversity, fun and frolics, and lot of bright colours – all the things India stands for.
